Louella was on camp with us in February 2017 in Paphos, Cyprus having qualified for the ETU 2017 Standard Duathlon Championships in Soria, Spain. She gave us this race report on an eventful day:
The weather forecast predicted 8C but feeling much colder with winds up to 35K, and rain in time for the start of the bike leg. It didn’t disappoint!
At the start line of the ETU Standard Duathlon Championships in Soria, Spain, the ladies were waiting to go at 11.45am when a huge gust of wind blew over the metal barriers: a sign of things to come!
A hard 10K run looping around the Central Park 4 times then up into T1 before 3 laps of the 25.6 mile bike course where we had to battle wind, rain and hail just to stay upright, before T2 and the final 5K run.
With the ETE wings on my GB suit, I powered on the run and overtook many people, to finish 11th female overall and Gold in F45-49 on official results. However when I got to the medal ceremony, it transpired that a Spanish athlete had been ahead of me but without complete timings, so I was demoted to Silver. Still, a good result and I’m looking forward to racing in June at the ETU Herning Middle Distance Tri Championships, and hoping my ETE wings will help me fly again!
